This prospective cohort study, published in the Journal of Urology, compared robotic kidney transplantation (RKT) with regional hypothermia against traditional open kidney transplantation in 654 patients treated at a single tertiary-care centre between 2013 and 2015.
The study found that the robotic, minimally invasive approach achieved graft function and clinical outcomes comparable to open surgery, while offering the recognised benefits of smaller incisions, less post-operative pain, and a lower risk of wound complications — an especially important consideration for transplant recipients on lifelong immunosuppression. The work represents IDEAL Stage 2B in the structured evaluation of the technique.
